This is a good example of an ongoing storyline:

Adrian had known Lindsay for 15 years. She lived next door and they had grown up together, went through school together.
The past year was the longest time in which they hadn't seen each other. It felt like ages ago that Adrian last saw Lindsay and her tomboyish looks. He wondered whether college had changed her at all....
#2 contributor:
Lindsay's mind wandered as she hit the edge of town. It had been nearly been a year since she had been back home. Of course she'd come home for the holidays, but she didn't really wander to far or have the chance to visit with old friends.
As the music of Boston washed over her a soft smile began to curl her full lips, a picture of the day she'd left him running through her mind. Adrian had given her a hug and tugged lightly on her pony tail. "No worries girl. You'll do great and we'll write to each other." He'd stayed in town, but she had left. Adrian had been her dearest friend growing up. Who'd have thought that punching a boy in the nose would tie they so strongly.
With a slight giggle she turned off on her old street. Would he be there...waiting for her. They'd not kept in touch as promised. But that small fact hadn't changed anything...at least for her.

Adrian was out front, shooting some hoops. He was the starting point guard for the Jayhawks, the Univeristy of Arkansas's basketball team. Last year they won the conference championships, thanks to a last second 3-pointer.
He wasn't really concentrating on the basket though. His mind was on Lindsay. He had heard she was coming home today and he wanted to be there to surprise her.

With mischief sparkling in her sapphire gaze, she pulled her car over to the curb. Something told her he was there, waiting. Adrian had always been able to surprise her, but spoiled her every atempt in doing so for him.
Carefully she slipped out and stood, stretching. Lindsay had left a skinny thing with medium length blondish hair. She'd returned long legged with golden locks that now danced over the middle of her back, long when it wasn't in a ponytail. She'd also filled out a bit. Would it surprise him to find she wasn't a tomboy anymore, she wondered.
Swift as a runner she skirted the neighbors house and rounded the corner of her own house. Yep, he was there alright, playing hoops in her drive way. Carefully she slipped up to mid-court, as they'd called it, and he placed both hands on her hips.....
